SecDev led a training and information day at the BBC in London, England on Tuesday, May 20th, 2014. The day began with training from our Disruptive Technology: Disruptive Journalism program, followed by a town hall discussion entitled The News Room of the Future.

The Cyber Frontier

14:30 -15:00 Rafal Rohozinski, CEO and Principal of SecDev, presents an overview of the main opportunities, challenges, and issues related to cyberspace-based journalism. Distinguishing between different streams of journalism (computational, data, investigative and open) in and through cyberspace, this presentation also covers emerging debates around ethics, privacy/surveillance and the impact on newsgathering and media organizations.

A Brave New World

15:00 -16:00 What’s new, what’s changed and how? This panel discusses the future of journalism, considering the means techniques, opportunities and challenges for newsgathering with the aim of sharing an understanding on the changing professional landscape and necessary tools and skills for moving forward.

The Conscience of the King

16:00 -17:00 Ethics, privacy/surveillance, and what it means for media organisations and practices. This panel discusses the implications on privacy, the limits of open journalism and news organizations as news creators. Questions to be resolved include: When does open source journalism become social media intelligence? How should news organizations and governments differ in approach to gathering open intelligence? What rules of accountability apply and how do they vary?
